The Vision for New Empowerment for Refugees, Inc. Is to work as a community toward the full integration of refugees in the United States and empower members to improve their well-being.
New Empowerment for Refugees (NER)is a 501(c)3 dedicated to helping refugees to integrate into American society and to become self-sufficient as soon as possible. We feel strongly that there is no reason for refugees to endure the struggles of others who came before them.
OUR GOALS
Our goals match with our mission, which is to get refugees and immigrants with disabilities capable of obtaining and maintaining employment, so as to sustain and fulfill themselves in life. We believe that we can eradicate the long-accepted situation that having a disability, disables (shuts off) the ability to prosper in life. We believe that with the will, appropriate strategies, and full accommodations, this is possible.
GOAL 1: Training
– Self-confidence
– Self-esteem
– Self-dependence
Most refugees and immigrants come from areas or regions where they grew up being subject to discrimination, harassment, verbal abuse, and misjudged with families, communities, and society.
All this averted their right and ability to fit within the society. Such situations inhibit them from the dream of becoming self-independent and fulfilled.
GOAL 2: Education
– ESL (English as a Second Language)
– Advanced English
– Career or technical education (formally vocational education).
– Job Training and up-to-date or new fashion of work skill development and technology.
GOAL 3
Medical equipment and Housing Facilitating, making them aware of what medical equipment they need and how to get them. Also connecting them with agencies that are involved – government, such as Voc Rehab or private agencies, health insurance that helps eligible people with disabilities get medical equipment. We will also assist them in finding affordable housing.
GOAL 4: Citizenship Assistance
Help those eligible learn and apply for citizenship.
GOAL 5: Employment Sourcing
Working with different companies and organizations in regard to hiring, employing, and keeping these individuals. We will help with reasonable accommodations where necessary in order to get these folks with diabilities employed.
Goal 6: Creating Jobs for People with Disabilities
Opening clothing and different materials donation centers to increase practical ways of employment. Opening thrift-life stores that mainly hire people with disabilities are not employed because, in addition to discrimination and misjudgment, there are also so limited jobs for them. So, creating even blue-collar positions would increase the chance for people with disabilities who are not sophisticated, and highly educated to work. This way, these individuals will get employed, promoted, and grow professionally.
GOAL 7: Assistive Technology
Provide assistive technology for the blind and the deaf. Training refugee and immigrant blind on how to use assistive technology. Teach the deaf the use of TTY and other special devices to communicate. We will equip these individuals with all that they need in order to fit for work.
GOAL 8: Transportation
Assisting refugees and immigrants with disabilities with general bus system and door-to-door paratransit services. Providing driving classes to help those able to drive get driver’s licenses. We will also make them aware of different means of facilitation for people with disabilities to get around including car handicap modification, hand control kits, and ramps, as well as how to use all this.
GOAL 9: Support Talents
Supporting those with talents in different areas identify and use their passion and talents to become successful. We will do that through time-to-time clubs, meetings, and interviews. We will help them participate and integrate with Americans with disability sport teams.
